Bromate, malonic acid, cerium — and acid
The classic BZ mixture is a few millimoles of potassium bromate (BrO₃⁻) and malonic acid (CH₂(COOH)₂), with a trace of cerium (Ce³⁺/Ce⁴⁺) or ferroin as catalyst, all dissolved in 1 M sulphuric acid. The bromate is the oxidiser, malonic acid the organic fuel, the metal a colour-changing indicator that tracks its own oxidation state. In a stirred flask the colour cycles every few seconds; in a thin unstirred film, the same chemistry paints concentric and spiral waves across the dish.
