A rabbit-population formula
Imagine a meadow with a maximum number of rabbits it can feed. Each year next year's rabbits = (growth rate) × (this year's rabbits) × (room still left in the meadow). Write that in symbols and you get xₙ₊₁ = r·xₙ·(1−xₙ). One line, one knob r. Out of that single line the whole modern theory of chaos was built.
